Dr Wendy Frear - Ann Hely, a Crimean War Nurse

Wendy will introduce the work of Pudding Bag Productions, a small local community group which aims to explore, present and widen access to local heritage and history through film making and other digital media.

She will show their film about Ann Ayre Hely who was born Ann Ayre Bradshaw in Ravenstone. After the death of her husband she volunteered in 1855 to go out to the East to nurse the sick and injured soldiers of the Crimean War.

Ann spent her last years in the almshouses at Ravenstone and in 1897, at the age of 78, she was awarded the Royal Red Cross medal for nursing military personnel.

Ann has now been awarded a Leicestershire County Council Green Plaque.
