Paul Siddals - The history of the gas industry in Leicestershire

This talk will take us from the first gas works and gas lighting, through the many developments, including natural gas conversion, and into the 1980's including information on gas in North West Leicestershire including Whitwick gas works and local gas supply, with its many challenges. This fascinating and often overlooked subject had a big impact on the development of industrial and domestic life from the 1820's for the following 175 years.

Paul spent most of his working life as an engineer in the gas industry, including the 1970's and 80's as distribution engineer covering west Leicestershire. For much of the 1970's, he had an office in Whitwick depot on Silver Street (in the remains of the old gas works) and managed the gangs working from there. He still lives in Whitwick all these years later.
